About the Position

Our Children & Families services at Gympie provide a range of supports to children, young people and families in the community. Our Foster & Kinship Care program provides support to children and young people who are placed in out of home care, and our Intensive Family Support Service works closely with families to provide support to ensure the safety and wellbeing of their children.

As part of our Children & Families Indigenous Workforce and Case Work strategy, we are currently looking to fill a Foster and Kinship Care Case Worker role on a permanent, full time basis.

This role’s overall purpose is to identify, build and maintain a supported network for foster and kinship carers. The Identified Foster and Kinship Care Case Worker will manage a caseload of foster carers; of which some of these carers will be caring for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander children.

There will be a strong focus on supporting non-Indigenous foster carers and staff to better understand the needs of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander children in care and to respond in a holistic way that considers family, spiritual, community and individual needs. The successful applicant will work in close partnership with our Child Safety service centres and the foster carers to achieve the elements of the young person’s cultural plans.

 

About You

As an experienced Case Worker, your experiences and knowledge will include:

  • Building and managing a successful network of Foster Carers throughout the region
  • Offering support and assistance to these carers to develop the necessary skills and resilience to be successful, utilising a culturally sensitive framework
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, and identify with this heritage
  • Knowledge of trauma informed practice, the Child Protection Act (1999) and relevant legislation
  • Understanding and development of meaningful connections with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community networks & people
  • Delivery of effective training and facilitation of support groups
  • Ability to operate within child-centred frameworks
  • Participation in recruitment and onboarding of new Foster Carers
  • Completion of complex documentation on time and within required guidelines

With highly developed communication skills, you will also have:

  • The ability to apply effective and professional decision making skills in crisis situations
  • Exceptional interpersonal and relationship building capabilities
  • Cultural awareness and sensitivity
  • Previous experience in consultation and negotiation practices
  • Proven ability to work within a small team, in a collaborative manner
  • Highly professional attitude, personal presentation and expectations

Qualifications and documentation required:

  • To identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander (this is viewed as a genuine occupational requirement)
  • Tertiary level qualifications in a relevant field, including Social Work, Psychology, Social or Behavioural Sciences
  • Certificate IV in Workplace Training and Assessment would be beneficial
  • A current unrestricted Queensland Drivers Licence
  • A current Blue Card (Working with Children)
  • Eligibility to gain a successful suitability check through the Department of Communities Child Safety Services (LCS-2)
